Summary

From the Academy Award®–winning actor, an unconventional memoir filled with raucous stories, outlaw wisdom, and lessons learned the hard way about living with greater satisfaction

I’ve been in this life for fifty years, been trying to work out its riddle for forty-two, and been keeping diaries of clues to that riddle for the last thirty-five。 Notes about successes and failures, joys and sorrows, things that made me marvel, and things that made me laugh out loud。 How to be fair。 How to have less stress。 How to have fun。 How to hurt people less。 How to get hurt less。 How to be a good man。 How to have meaning in life。 How to be more me。

Recently, I worked up the courage to sit down with those diaries。 I found stories I experienced, lessons I learned and forgot, poems, prayers, prescriptions, beliefs about what matters, some great photographs, and a whole bunch of bumper stickers。 I found a reliable theme, an approach to living that gave me more satisfaction, at the time, and still: If you know how, and when, to deal with life’s challenges - how to get relative with the inevitable - you can enjoy a state of success I call “catching greenlights。”

So I took a one-way ticket to the desert and wrote this book: an album, a record, a story of my life so far。 This is fifty years of my sights and seens, felts and figured-outs, cools and shamefuls。 Graces, truths, and beauties of brutality。 Getting away withs, getting caughts, and getting wets while trying to dance between the raindrops。

Hopefully, it’s medicine that tastes good, a couple of aspirin instead of the infirmary, a spaceship to Mars without needing your pilot’s license, going to church without having to be born again, and laughing through the tears。

It’s a love letter。 To life。

It’s also a guide to catching more greenlights - and to realizing that the yellows and reds eventually turn green too。

Good luck。

Great book! Loved it! It’s every bit McConaughey style。 What an interesting life!

Audio version is a MUST

Nancy

Listened on audio—the velvety and Texas drawl of McConaughey makes this audio purely enjoyable。 He knows how to make a story the right size as my dad used to say。

I am all over the place with my opinion of this book, funny, entertaining, TMI, raw, strong language at times, interesting insight, repetitive expressions。 BUT。。。I would recommend it。。。 especially if you like Matthew McConaughey。 I listened to the audio which is read by him。 Definitely a way to go。

This wasn’t really my gig。 It’s written like we’re sitting around a fire having a beverage or six, and he’s telling stories。 A lot of stories。 Good message of positivity and how sometimes a negative (red light) is often really a positive。 Green light。 Totally worth the audible narration to hear his relaxed drawl。 Had it not been for that, I probably could have skipped this read。

This book was interesting。 I learned a few things about Mr。 McConaughey。

This book is fun, made me laugh, cry, think about life。 He is so entertaining and I listen to the audio book so more fun because Matthew is telling his own story。I love it。

Has its entertaining bits。 Thankfully quick read。

What a fun listen! MM is honest about who he is, where he’s come from and where he hopes to go。 He truly is a family man and has stuck to that over the years。 The book is full of humour and warmth。 The audiobook is a must listen to be surrounded by his Texas drawl and laughter; often at himself。

Really enjoyed this as an audio book。 Introspection and memoir woven into a great story。

Audiobook:Uh, it was good。 Not sure what I expected and he talks about his family, brothers mom and dad and some of his younger years。 This book is more a memoir and he narrated the audio so the audio was nice to listen to。 The stories he told were mostly good stories。 No real juice on hollywood。 He kind of mentions numbers here and there and dips in a bit, just a bit, on the flip of being not famous to being famous。 He talks about his travels and his RV life。 No juice about ladies or nothing。He Audiobook:Uh, it was good。 Not sure what I expected and he talks about his family, brothers mom and dad and some of his younger years。 This book is more a memoir and he narrated the audio so the audio was nice to listen to。 The stories he told were mostly good stories。 No real juice on hollywood。 He kind of mentions numbers here and there and dips in a bit, just a bit, on the flip of being not famous to being famous。 He talks about his travels and his RV life。 No juice about ladies or nothing。He wraps up mostly about his marriage and his kid and his kids name。It gave me some perspective into who he is as a man and a guy but mostly I read this because it seemed to be popular and kind of short。 Like 9 something hours。The audiobook was mostly good。 Say there were 10 stories in there, about 5 or 6 were solidly good。 Mostly stories about him and his family and a students life in Australia。Audiobook version: He interjects like things that he would think make great bumperstickers like all throughout the book, nearly randomly, so you'll be in a good story listening on and he'll get real loud all of a sudden and just say some random thing。 IMHO, be cool if that was left out, but eh。 。。。more

Woah this book was a roller coaster full of truly ~unbelievable ~ stories and his argument for why everything is believable。 A few new perspectives and anecdotes。 It was nice to listen to an audiobook that literally felt like a high class production with various accents and such instead of a computer generated voice read aloud。 The phrase I kept telling myself throughout this book was this could truly only have been written by a white, straight, wealthy man because some of it I was just like no Woah this book was a roller coaster full of truly ~unbelievable ~ stories and his argument for why everything is believable。 A few new perspectives and anecdotes。 It was nice to listen to an audiobook that literally felt like a high class production with various accents and such instead of a computer generated voice read aloud。 The phrase I kept telling myself throughout this book was this could truly only have been written by a white, straight, wealthy man because some of it I was just like no way but then I remembered white, straight, wealthy man and thought about how this world works。 Nonetheless entertaining and so different from most things I read。 Would I recommend? Yes, because it’s only about 7 hours of your life (wasted or well spent - you decide)。 Will I be thinking about it for while? Yes。 Do I like that I will continue to think about this? No。 Will I vote for him for governor of TX if he runs on a liberal ticket? Probably yes。 4/5 。。。more

He is unexpectedly far more educated then I had anticipated。 I feel like the people who don’t appreciate this book are also those who Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood went over their heads。 A lot of people say egotistical or self centred but it’s a memoir, a collection of bits and pieces from years of diary entries about his life? I feel sorry for you if all the introspective lessons of this book were missed on you。 A large theme of his character is that if you follow the rules and you He is unexpectedly far more educated then I had anticipated。 I feel like the people who don’t appreciate this book are also those who Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood went over their heads。 A lot of people say egotistical or self centred but it’s a memoir, a collection of bits and pieces from years of diary entries about his life? I feel sorry for you if all the introspective lessons of this book were missed on you。 A large theme of his character is that if you follow the rules and you are disciplined, you are then enabled and entitled to find yourself by narrating outside convention。 Like he said, it’s a love letter to life, his life。 Too many people are incapable of reading between the lines, or simply taking a moment to deconstruct what he’s expressing through each experience in life。 I definitely recommend sticking to your step by step self help books if you don’t want to as such。 This book IS profound, it is interesting, and it gives a window into the heart of the eccentric man that is Matthew MaConoughey, the values that define him at his core。 Furthermore, I think it’s strangely bizarre people feel the need/authority to criticise his family。 Everyone has different families, different flavours of fucked up and love; there are literally, what 8 billion people on this planet? And you think his family has to be normal? Functioning? He’s being real and honest, being human。 At least with everything going on they God honest love each other and have a sense of loyalty。 Just the way you can always learn something from someone else’s life stories, I hope that everyone that reads this book can take something away。 At the very least, I am so blown away at how self-aware he is, from a very young age till now。 He answers the very hard questions of why am I like this, why do I do that? Something people seldom do these days, I feel。 For the soul searchers and the people who ask ‘but why?’ this is a book for you。 。。。more

This book was alright, alright, alright。 It was great to hear the story of turning the negatives into many positives in his life。

So inspiring… felt it good perspective allowed me to look at things in a different respective! It’s one I’ll go back to for sure!

Writing a review about someone’s memoir always seemed kind of odd to me because you’re critiquing how someone wants to share their life with the world。。 so just remember before you start page one that you’re about to get a sneak peek into the life of Matthew - a real human, not just the person you see on screen。 This includes some stories of wet dreams, the legendary Alright, Alright, Alright origin story, and how he’s been able to see all his highs/lows of life as a greenlight

Listening to Matthew McConaughey narrate his sometimes funny, sometimes serious and interesting life stories was a great way to spend a long drive with my husband。

While readable this book is not something I would read twice。 It comes across as a bit preachy。 Most of us can't simply take the time off work to travel when we want or buy a house whenever we want to move。 While his life has not been a total bed of roses it is also an incredibly fortunate life till now。 It makes it hard to relate to the author in some ways in part I think because he always seems so certain about what he wants *all* the time。 I'm not sure why this book left me so discontented bu While readable this book is not something I would read twice。 It comes across as a bit preachy。 Most of us can't simply take the time off work to travel when we want or buy a house whenever we want to move。 While his life has not been a total bed of roses it is also an incredibly fortunate life till now。 It makes it hard to relate to the author in some ways in part I think because he always seems so certain about what he wants *all* the time。 I'm not sure why this book left me so discontented but its a quick read and if you enjoy this actors work you should check it out from the library。 。。。more

All right, all right, all right。 To be honest, I probably wouldn’t have read this book。 My sister told me that it was kind of a wild ride and wanted to discuss it afterward。 So I listened to it in a day。 It’s kind of a trip。 He’s random and all over the place but has some funny stories and it’s nice to listen to his voice narrate the audio book。 Definitely nothing life-changing, but probably not the worst celebrity memoir out there。

I had no opinion one way or the other on McConaughey, but I guess I thought I knew who he was, based on the handful of romcoms I'd seen him in。 "True Detective" changed my opinion of him somewhat, but still, I judged him on his looks alone。I have to say there's a lot more to him than that, having listened to this audible book - narrated by him, which I highly recommend。 If you're going to read his words, might as well listen to them in his own voice。 He was kind of a crack-up; the kind of story- I had no opinion one way or the other on McConaughey, but I guess I thought I knew who he was, based on the handful of romcoms I'd seen him in。 "True Detective" changed my opinion of him somewhat, but still, I judged him on his looks alone。I have to say there's a lot more to him than that, having listened to this audible book - narrated by him, which I highly recommend。 If you're going to read his words, might as well listen to them in his own voice。 He was kind of a crack-up; the kind of story-teller who laughs at his own jokes。On the whole, I think this book was uplifting; it's not going to change anyone's life, *I* don't think, but it may inspire you to strike out of familiar waters。 I don't think his style of doing things is going to work for someone with a different personality - and without his, let's just say it, personal beauty and charisma。 Life is different depending on how you're packaged。 But still! Some of this may be useful or inspiring。 。。。more

I really wanted to like this one。 It started off great and pulled me in, but towards the end I was more and more less interested。 This contains some fun anecdotes, but midway through they were kind of lackluster。
